Michelle Hooper is leaving Searchlight Pictures after two decades as executive vice president of marketing. During her tenure, the studio accumulated nearly 200 Academy Award nominations and more than 130 Golden Globe nominations. Searchlight converted 49 of those Oscar nods into wins, including Best Picture for Nomadland, The Shape of Water, Birdman, 12 Years a Slave, and Slumdog Millionaire.

The studio also received Best Picture nominations at the Golden Globes for those five titles, along with 15 others. Hooper joined Searchlight in 2006. Her responsibilities covered publicity, awards, and creative marketing. A longtime colleague described Hooper as a stellar leader whose creative insights helped the team identify where a film fit within the cultural moment. The colleague noted that Hooper was also a formidable collaborator who could close campaigns using real-time feedback.

This awards season, Hooper led marketing efforts for Wild Horse Nine and Behemonth!, among other releases. Her career began at Fox Broadcast, where she served as vice president of entertainment publicity for four years. She worked on campaigns for The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and American Idol. Before joining Searchlight, Hooper worked at CBS Entertainment as the director of entertainment communications, where she helped shape the publicity strategy for Survivor.

In 2025, Variety included Hooper in its Women’s Impact Report. The report cited her work alongside fellow executives Rebecca Kearey, DanTram Nguyen, and Katie Goodson. Their efforts contributed to a strong showing at the Oscars, including 10 nominations for A Complete Unknown and A Real Pain. Kieran Culkin won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the Jesse Eisenberg film A Complete Unknown.

In a joint statement, the Searchlight team explained that the studio’s success stems from adventurous programming choices and deep relationships with filmmakers. The team stated that the company navigates industry challenges by trusting that audiences still want films that entertain, challenge, and provoke. Hooper’s departure marks the end of a period during which Searchlight maintained a consistent presence among the top contenders for major industry honors.
