Eighty-one businesses in Petal, Mississippi, have signed up for the Shop Petal First campaign, a figure that establishes a new record for participation. The Petal Area Chamber of Commerce is organizing the event to drive customer traffic to local retailers ahead of the holiday season.

The campaign has evolved over recent years as the city's commercial sector has grown. Business owners view the initiative as a primary method for exposing their storefronts to potential new customers. Jodi Eurie, who owns Rhinestone Ranch, stated that the program allows merchants to be seen by shoppers who might otherwise go elsewhere. She noted that supporting small businesses before large chains provides job opportunities and helps the community expand.

The current iteration of the event operates under the theme “Wrapped in Local Love.” The Chamber encourages residents to purchase goods within the city limits rather than traveling out of town or ordering online. Lindsay Brown, the executive director of the Petal Area Chamber of Commerce, explained that the event generates revenue for participating stores and increases sales tax income for the city.

Brown attributed the record number of registrants to a strong retail space and an expanding business community. She described the growth in the sector as astounding. The Chamber is distributing a shopping magazine to approximately 15,000 households to promote the participating locations and outline the rules for the associated shopping contest.

Shoppers who participate in the campaign have the opportunity to win a grand prize of $2,000. Additional details regarding the list of participating businesses and contest procedures are contained in the promotional magazine. The Chamber expects the three-day event to bring thousands of shoppers to the area.

The Shop Petal First campaign is scheduled to take place from November 19 to November 21. Residents can find specific store locations and contest information in the materials distributed by the Chamber.
