Jay-Z will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in February.
The NFL announced the news on Monday. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for 14 February near Los Angeles. This will be the first time the hip-hop artist performs at the championship game. His company, Roc Nation, has produced the halftime show since 2019. He has selected the performers for those events but had not taken the stage himself until now.
The league did not clarify if Jay-Z will be the sole headliner. The NFL suggested in a statement that fans should watch for guest stars. It specifically noted that his wife, Beyoncé, would likely be on the list of potential guests.
The announcement followed two concerts Jay-Z held last weekend at the Los Angeles stadium where the Super Bowl will take place. Those shows were part of a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
Shawn Carter, Jay-Z's real name, described the moment as a dream come true. He said the journey from his first album to the Super Bowl stage represents thirty years of work and culture.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell expressed excitement for fans to see Jay-Z's artistry. Goodell recalled asking Jay-Z to take the stage one day when the moment felt right, a request made when Roc Nation first agreed to produce the show.
