Trump Jr. Hunts With Kremlin-Linked Oligarch
Flight data and witness accounts confirm a two-day stay in western Mongolia in late August, raising questions about proximity between the US administration and Russian interests.

Donald Trump Jr. spent two days in western Mongolia at the end of August alongside Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with close ties to the Kremlin. The trip, verified by flight records, local guides, and public documents, places the president's eldest son in the same camp as a figure who heads the International Boxing Association and formerly led the Russian Boxing Federation.
Kremlev arrived in Ulaanbaatar by charter from Kazakhstan before traveling to the hunting camp. He was joined by Arthur Martirosov, a partner in the US-sanctioned venture fund Voskhod. According to the Financial Times, the two Russians departed after two days, leaving Trump Jr. to continue his stay. During the period, Trump Jr. also hunted a rare Altai argali, an endangered wild sheep, and met with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh.
A local participant in the trip stated that Trump Jr. and Kremlev were careful to avoid being photographed together. In response, a spokesperson for Trump Jr. characterized the encounter as a casual social event. "Don has made clear that he has a personal friendship, not a business relationship, with Umar," the spokesperson said, noting that the men were introduced by a mutual acquaintance in the hunting community and share a passion for outdoor recreation.
Security experts argue that the distinction between personal and business ties matters less than the visibility of the connection. Holden Triplette, who served as director of counterintelligence on the US National Security Council during Trump's first term, warned that Russian intelligence services often seek to weaponize relationships with high-value targets. "The moment the Russian security and intelligence services figure out someone has a relationship with anyone of high value, they will try to weaponise that," Triplette said.
The encounter occurs amid ongoing scrutiny of financial and social ties between the Trump family and Russian figures. In early October, Kremlev claimed that Trump Jr. reimbursed him for post-wedding celebrations. Previously, US Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that no investigation would be launched into the wedding, which was partially funded by Kremlev. While Trump family members have denied knowing Kremlev, Democrats in Congress have pledged to open an investigation.
Kremlev, 43, has served as president of the International Boxing Association, an organization based in Lausanne that sets standards for international competitions. His role has placed him in regular contact with global sports officials and political figures, adding a layer of institutional complexity to the personal friendship described by Trump Jr.'s camp.
