Forrest County Democrats train volunteers for Election Day
Local officials clarify that observers monitor polling stations but do not interact with voters, with additional sessions scheduled this week.

Forrest County Democrats hosted a training session to prepare volunteers for Election Day duties. Melanie Sowell, the party chair, emphasized that poll watchers observe the environment rather than manage the vote. Sowell stated that these volunteers do not take names or touch ballots. Their role is to watch the action in the room and report findings to the election team.
The session focused on identifying potential issues at polling places. Topics included voters being turned away and long lines forming. Sowell explained that the goal is to ensure the process runs with integrity. She said the volunteers want everyone to feel safe and confident in their ability to cast a ballot. Sowell expressed confidence that issues would not arise in Forrest County, but she noted the party has a duty to verify that operations are correct.
Alex Pickle, a local poll watcher, described the group's mission as protecting voter rights. Pickle said the volunteers aim to make people feel comfortable while voting. Pickle also noted that having representatives from different parties at the polls can help build trust in the process. She said that campaigns and parties can send their own observers to instill confidence in the election.
The next training session is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom. A second session will follow on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. on the same platform. Individuals who want to become poll watchers can visit forrestcomsdems.com for more information. People can also text the word VOTE to 888-300-4350 to connect with the Mississippi Democratic Party.
The local training effort is part of a wider preparation for the upcoming election. Volunteers will be present at polling locations to monitor conditions. The party encourages residents to join the effort to ensure a smooth voting experience.
