Organizers in Picayune are moving ahead with plans for a new skatepark, with local leaders now offering full support for the construction effort.
The project has been in development for several years, driven by two local residents who have long advocated for the facility. The design for the park was created by Fifth Pocket Skateparks. A rendering of the proposed structure is available, showing the layout of the future space.
Mayor Jim Luke has confirmed that the city is actively pursuing an additional grant to help cover the costs. This financial move comes as part of a broader effort to secure the necessary funds for the build.
Jacob Guthrie, one of the local residents behind the initiative, noted that skateboarding serves as a common denominator for many different types of people. He said, “Skating is bizarre because you expect it to be a subculture, but it really is a common denominator for a lot of people because skateboarding in and of itself is now a group of people.” He added that the community includes full-blown athletes, musicians, and hairdressers who all share the activity.
Pete Taggard, the other resident championing the project, described the sport as a life lesson. He explained, “Trying to learn a new trick, you do it over and over and you wipe out over and over, and you just keep getting back up. That’s a life lesson. You get knocked down, you get back up and go at it again.”
Funding for the skatepark will rely heavily on grants and donations from community businesses. The project team says they are eager to see the park completed and welcoming to the community.
